Marvel at Midnight

Someone asked me recently what comics I’m reading. While I try to pick up a variety of books (and always have), I rambled off my favorites. The list? Well look no further than the four titles above, and I said them in that order.

A few weeks back, my girlfriend asked me “Why are there so many Marvel comics in the apartment?”

So what the hell is happening to me?!?!?

Or is it not me? Is it that DC Comics, since the New 52, has done an amazing job at alienating long time readers? When the New 52 started, I read everything. Slowly, but surely, I started dropping titles. It used to be that when I dropped a DC Comic, I pick up a new DC Comic. But now, I’ve been picking up Marvel comics in place of DC comics. This never happened before the New 52. Ever. The latest crop of Marvel books have fun and fresh concepts. While I really love and have fun with what Snyder is doing on Batman, I wouldn’t call a retelling of Batman’s origin “fresh”. Trinity War was fresh, but not really fun. And Forever Evil? Neither fun nor fresh (although I enjoyed the first issue and am intrigued by where this title is going).

My hope is, following Zero Year and Forever Evil, DC Comics starts to have more fun with their titles. Otherwise, I fear I will be picking up more Marvel titles in the future…
