Ever wonder how they got ‘The Bat’ to look so good in The Dark Knight Rises? Well, wonder no more.

So, that picture you see is a Dark Knight Rises crew shirt. How did I get such a thing (along with other fun set goodies)? Simple. I was lucky enough to work on The Dark Knight Rises. In fact, I wrote a whole set report a year ago, which you can more about below. I had the post scheduled to go live on July 20th, but I decided it’d be in bad taste to celebrate on such a tragic day. So, without further delay, read about my on set antics of a once in a lifetime opportunity! [[MORE]]

The Dark Knight Rises comes out today, but I’m writing this post in August of 2011
Why was this written so long ago? Well, for the past year I’ve been keeping a terrible secret from you all. I noted last year that I would not be posting any TDKR spoiler images, but I never fully explained why. As some of you may know, I moved to Pittsburgh last July to start attending Carnegie Mellon University. I had known that The Dark Knight Rises was to film there and started to try and figure out a way to work on the set. I sent my information to the Pittsburgh film office, but never heard back. Then, I found an article on ComingSoon.net about how “Magnus Rex” was filming at Carnegie Mellon University. Being as my Masters program is “entertainment” related, I emailed a few people at the school requesting that our department get a chance to work on set. It was a long shot, but I hoped the school could use it’s connections to get us on set. And it worked! They put us in touch with the location manager and through this I was able to work as many days as possible down town.
I also worked the day at Heinz field, which WAS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE ON SET EXPERIENCE. I got the chance to walk around the stadium, direct extras, walk on the field briefly, and see an amazing explosion. I got to see those Gotham Rogues shirts up close and see some of the Pittsburgh Steelers play for Gotham. A fun day I will never forget. Especially when I had to run through the whole stadium (twice) handing out ear plugs to other PA’s. Best part? Hearing Chris Nolan say “You are all doing a great job” over the walkie.
I also had such a “cliché” PA moment at lunch when Nolan and his young son popped ahead of me on line at Craft services. I smiled politely (meanwhile I was so hungry I wanted to yell “NOOOOO”). Moments later Joseph Gordon Levitt and I were taking Cesar salad from the same bowl. I honestly didn’t recognize him and thought he was one of the cops on set.
During the shooting, they filmed a few scenes down the street from my apartment (on CMU’s campus), so I got to sit back, relax, and watch some well choreographed fight scenes. Having the Batmobile parked on your street was pretty neat too!
I did keep a few souvenirs, a handful of fake snow from Gotham City and a Gotham Rogues t-shirt, but the memories will last alot longer…
